Different signs for different needs….Here are some TIPS!

As a business owner, you NEED a sign. It’s just a necessity. But, getting the right type of sign for your location and industry is an important factor to consider when getting new signage for your business.

4 Tips on how to buy the RIGHT sign for your company:

1. Color is important: Keep in mind that different colors bring out different emotions in people. Reds and Oranges typically entice alert people and catch their attention; Blues and greens are soothing and calming (best if you own a salon, massage business, etc.), Yellow and flourescent colors excite people (movie theatre, theme park, etc.). Although you want a bright color that is going to catch your target markets attention, you want people to be able to read you sign. If your sign has light green letters, you don’t want to give it a bright and light background, like yellow for example. From far away, that is hard to read and hurts the eye. To make the sign visible, you would would want a dark background with bright letters or vis versa, black letters with a bright background. Check out the example below to get a better idea.

2. Also, when it comes to font selection, you want to choose a simple font that is easy to read from far away. Best fonts are usually something like Arial Bold or Tahoma.

3. You want your sign to appear as professional as possible: spell all words correctly, be polite and appropriate when using slogans and logos, and you don’t want to squeeze a whole bunch of words on a small sign. It’s just going to end up looking like a big blob to people driving/passing by.

4. BE THOUGHTFUL! Remember that signs provide the FIRST IMPRESSION of your business, so you want to create the best sign possible for your business with the right font, correct colors, appropriate size and make sure it’s made of durable and strong material.

Although signs seem minor, simple and boring, a lot of thought can go into creating the perfect sign for your business!

I hope these tips are helpful to prospective sign buyers out their in cyberland!

TRUSS ROOF PICTURES — DO YOU HAVE THEM ON YOUR ROOF?

For those building owners and property managers unsure of what Truss roofs are, here is an excellent picture example. A truss used in roof construction carries the weight of roof deck and framing and of wind loads on the upper chord; an example is a Fink truss.

Truss roofs are typically more decorative and are not like typical flat roofs. They look very appealing to the eyes and may hold up well in high winds (typically seen a lot in South Florida during hurricane season), but in a case of a serious fire, they can be deadly to first-responders.

“Once You’ve Worked for Yourself, You Can’t Work for Someone Else”

March 18, 2010 -

I’ve heard similar sentiments from many business owners, but it was probably Regina Leggiere who put it most plainly, speaking from recent experience. From 1995 to 2005, she had built up her SIGN A RAMA franchise in New Jersey. Then, she sold her business to join her boyfriend, another SIGN A RAMA franchisee, in Florida. For two years, she helped him build his business before taking a position as Director of National Accounts for SIGN A RAMA. She lasted almost a year.

“It’s nothing against the company,” Regina told me. “My next move was to buy another SIGN A RAMA franchise because there is no finer sign organization. I love the company, but I also love working for myself. Also, I enjoy the process of building a business and building equity in it.”

She said the second business hasn’t been easier, though: “I bought this franchise basically right as economy collapsed. With the first business, financing was much easier to find. This time, I had to self-finance the purchase. And, sales have been more of a challenge. I’ve had to do a lot more marketing this time.”

To market her business, she has:

· Convinced other local franchisees to go in on local advertising

· Hired a full-time sales person and developed a list of local businesses to cold-call

· Registered her company with the county school board as a woman-owned business; and

· Joined three Chambers of Commerce plus three networking groups, like apartment and real estate management associations: “Those are my repeat customers. They always need signs for open houses, sales, and development projects. So I’ve also advertised in the local trade publications for them.”

Regina said other challenges the recession has presented include collections and employee morale. “I often buy lunch to get the team together and keep the environment fun. I also try to keep the workload lighter on Friday afternoons, and I give extra time off whenever I can.” On collections, she said she encourages credit card payments now because she feels more secure getting payment from the credit card company than from a client’s checks. “So I know instantly whether or not the client can pay.”

On whether it was worth it to buy another business, she immediately said yes. “It’s funny that everyone thinks you’re rich when you have your own business, but you’re working harder for less money than you ever did before. Short-term returns are never what you expected, even if you’ve done it before. You have to look at it as an investment in yourself. Stick it out, the rewards will come. I know that even the toughest of days working for myself are better than the best days working for someone else.”

Pictures of Truss Marking Rule signs (FLA REQUIREMENT)

Depending on whether your building has truss roofs, truss floors, or both truss roofs and floors, will depend on which of the three signs you will need.

Picture 1: The “R” sign represents that a building has Truss Roofs.
Picture 2: The “T” sign represents that a building has Truss Flooring.
Picture 3: The “RF” sign represents that a building has truss roofs AND floors.

Dear FLA Business Managers and Property Owners, do you know about the TRUSS MARKING RULE?

If you actually take the time to look at the architectural structure of most commercial buildings in Florida, they are quite beautifully designed— most built with truss roofing and flooring.  As a consumer, such a building design is visually stimulating and doesn’t seem dangerous in the least bit, but as a Building Owner or Property Manager, that same beautiful truss roof or floor could become hazardous in the case of a serious fire.

If a serious fire were to take place in a building designed with truss floors or roofs, there is a great chance that those same floors or roofs could collapse while first-time responders are on the premises and such an incident could be fatal, if not deadly.

For that primary reason, the State of Florida Fire Marshal’s Office has recently implemented a new Truss Marking Rule that requires Building Owners and Managers to post new warning signage on their buildings.  This new regulation (69A-60.0081), established as of December 13, 2009, applies to any building in the state of Florida that has roof or floor trusses.

Now I am sure some of you are questioning whether your building has truss roofing or flooring and if this regulation applies to you.  In the Fire Marshal’s official news release, truss roofing and flooring has been clearly defined as “light frame.”  To the left, you can see examples of both truss roofs and floors.

The requirements of how the sign should look are also clearly defined by the Fire Marshal as “a sign with a Maltese Cross measuring 8 inches horizontally and 8 inches vertically produced of a bright red material with a reflective background.  We recommend the sign be 12 inches by 12 inches to ensure the cross is highly visible.

Something like a small sign may not seem important to you, but you want to remember that it could save someone’s life in a harmful situation like a fire.  Don’t let something so minor cause a major problem, like injury or death.

Owner of SIGNARAMA Davie, Gina Leggiere, can testify first-hand that the signs are a good prevention method for keeping first responders, such as firefighters, away from harm or even death in a serious fire.

“When I was growing up in New Jersey, one of my family members was a fire fighter and was killed instantly when he was on top of a truss roof building while trying to put out the fire.  In the midst of him trying to put the fire out, the roof caved in and he plunged to his death.  That could have easily been prevented if there were signage to warn him,” Leggiere said.

In an effort to prevent harm or death during the occurrence of a fire, the Truss Marking Rule has been imposed onto all multi-tenant and commercial buildings including apartment buildings, clubhouses, restaurants, shopping centers, maintenance shops, townhomes and every other building that has truss roofing or flooring.

Although the sign may seem minor and unimportant, it will allow a building owner’s organization to meet the required regulations of Florida as well as inform Floridians of potential danger in the case of a fire.

The rule is required to be in compliance no later than March 13, 2010.  Obviously that date has passed, so that means its time to put some pep in your step and get your signage needs met today!

The best advice we can give you is abide by the minor regulation and order your signage for your buildings.  If you own several building that have truss floors or roofs, order your signs in bulk, and the cost per sign will come out much cheaper! Although a small 12 inch sign may seem petty to you, it could save someone’s life and keep you in good standing with Florida’s Fire Marshal.

For specific information to find out how this rule applies to your building, contact your local Fire Marshal and your Building Engineer.
